VNS Matrix are four Australian artists who use and critique new technologies. The group formed in Adelaide, South Australia in 1991. Their first major project was the production of a 6m x 3m billboard for the Tin Sheds Watch this Space project curated by Jeff Gibson (June 1992). The image created for Watch this Space, ‘A Cyberfeminist Manifesto for the 21 st Century’ has been widely circulated, having been reproduced in Art & Text, Broadsheet & Framework. A cibachrome of the image was exhibited at Siggraph ’92 in Chicago and A4 photocopies have been pasted in public sites in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
Their current project is the on-going development of an interactive computer artwork All New Gen. The large scale installation All New Gen (lightboxes, soundworks, video, photography & computer interactive) was exhibited at the Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide in November 1993. In late 1994 and early 1995 All New Gen will tour to Helsinki, London, Toronto, Sydney and Melbourne.
VNS Matrix have come to electronic art from the fields of photography, film, video, music, performance, writing, feminism and cultural theory. The impetus of the group is to explore a (feminist-based) critique of new technologies, investigating cultural & social implications, the motivating force behind its rapid development, interaction between
art and technology, the images of women produced through sophisticated computing imaging devices and the involvement and influence of women in the evolution of new technologies. VNS Matrix create hybrid electronic artworks which ironically integrate theory with popular culture. As cyberfeminists, VNS Matrix’ mission is to hijack technology and remap cyberspace.
