24th Biennale of Sydney: On Cyberfeminism in Australia

VNS Matrix with Soda Jerk’s Terror Nullius

Join writer and art historian, Amelia Groom, and Josephine Starrs and V Barratt of VNS Matrix, for a panel about Cyberfeminism, a groundbreaking  movement that swept through cyberspaces in the 1990s. Following the panel, there will be a screening of Soda Jerk’s cult classic Terror Nullius, and screenings of VNS Matrix’s audio-visual works.

The term Cyberfeminism was first used in Adelaide, Australia by groundbreaking artist collective VNS Matrix. Their work and manifesto speak to the radical, queer, anti-authoritarian, democratising potential of the internet and contributed to a global movement inspiring generations of artists and theorists including VNS Matrix’s official remixers and torchbearers Soda Jerk. Join celebrated art theorist Amelia Groom at State Library NSW in conversation with founding members of VNS Matrix Josephine Starrs and V Barratt, speaking to VNS Matrix’s career, the impact of the Cyberfeminist movement, the contemporary reality of the internet, and the continued relevance of the manifesto. After the talk there will also be a screening of works by VNS Matrix as well as Soda Jerk’s cult hit eco-horror revenge fable Terror Nullius.
